Hikayat Genji & Panji | Drawing pen, Acrylic on Canvas | 100 x 150 cm ( 4 panels) Adalah Murasaki Shikibu, seorang perempuan Jepang, penulis novel pertama di dunia yang dikenal dengan judul The Tale of Genji. Dalam buku The Pleasures of Japanese Literature, Keene mengklaim bahwa Murasaki menulis "adikarya fiksi Jepang" dengan mengambil unsur-unsur tradisi waka buku harian istana, dan Monogatari asal zaman sebelumnya, ditulisnya dalam campuran aksara Tionghoa dan aksara Jepang seperti dalam Putri Kaguya atau Hikayat Ise. Ia mengambil unsur-unsur serta mencampurkan gaya penulisan sejarah Cina, puisi naratif, dan prosa Jepang kontemporer. Cerita Hikayat Genji berlatar pada akhir abad ke-9 hingga awal abad ke-10, dan Murasaki menghilangkan unsur-unsur dongeng dan fantasi seperti sering ditemukan pada monogatari sebelumnya. The Journey of Panji | Art Installation | 500 x 200 x 300 cm (Singapore Art Museum collection) Dalam kesusastraan pelbagai bahasa Nusantara—seperti catatan Zoetmulder—Kisah Panji menjadi sebuah tema yang sangat menarik sebagai model sastra “Jawa Tengahan” yang disampaikan dalam “bahasa” kidung, yang kemudian menyebar di beberapa wilayah Asia Tenggara. Panji—jika menggunakan terminologi linguistik—menjadi semacam “lingua franca”, sebuah perantara—seperti yang disebut Adrian Vickers—bagi “Peradaban  Pesisir “ Asia Tenggara. Cerita ini mempunyai banyak versi, dan telah menyebar di beberapa tempat di Nusantara (Jawa, Bali, Kalimantan, Malaysia, Thailand, Kamboja, Myanmar, dan Filipina). Dalam berbagai versi ini dimasukkan dalam satu kategori yang disebut "Lingkup Panji" (Panji cycle). Cerita Panji bermula di Jawa sekitar akhir abad 14 hingga awal abad 15 Masehi.
